First 100% Electric Heavy Weight Service Vehicle for Tunneling

Since the industrial revolution pollution of our environment has grown ever larger, to a point where we now threaten to make earth uninhabitable for future generations. As one of the oldest company in the global tunnelling industry, we see it as our responsibility to constantly find new and sustainable solutions that guarantee the best results for our customers while at the same time ensure future generations can also enjoy a liveable environment.
With the world’s first fully battery powered service vehicle for tunnelling and mining, the Mühlhäuser Service Vehicle (MSVe), we have created a more efficient, safer and cheaper solution for onsite transport, that is also a step forward in long-term sustainability.

The standard version of our fully electric MSVe consists of two vehicles and is used to supply Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) with segment rings and mortar for back filling. This vehicle combines the flexibility of trackless equipment with the handling capacity of a train – effectively “a train on rubber tires”. Not to forget a train that is entirely powered by batteries with a permissible total wait of 180 t.
Even under full load speeds of up to 25 km/h are possible while the vehicle still moves with only 68 dB across the site and has no emissions.

The extremely flat design with all drive, control, and steering components already integrated, makes it possible to use the entire vehicle length as loading space for mortar segments or to install additional add-ons such as mortar boxes, cranes etc. ensuring maximum efficiency with every trip in and out of the tunnel and therefore boosting working speeds.

Mühlhäuser also made sure to make this vehicle safer then ever for anyone involved.

The enclosed, air-conditioned driver cabin not only meets the highest standard of design, but also offers the operator state-of-the-art technology and a superior sense of security. The large hatch at the front of the cabin provides free entry and exit either to the front, right or left in any situation.

The intelligent chassis technology ensures smooth driving even while fully loaded at high speeds. This ensures the operators feeling of security and enhances confidence in his capability to handle this road-train in any situation. Numerous sensors and the latest laser technology provide the operator with various options of control support, including the entirely autonomous operation of the vehicle. Sophisticated drive and control systems with integrated sensors and a touch pad display constantly provides the operator with all necessary vehicle information.

To ensure further safety the entire vehicle control technology is designed redundantly – meaning that even with a complete failure of one electrical circuit the vehicle would not come to a halt. For maximum safety the entire brake system is designed thrice redundant.

Mühlhäuser uses state-of-the-art battery technology, allowing full battery charging from 0 to 100 % within 30 minutes. This means the vehicle can be fully charged while being loaded with segment rings or mortar, making the exchange of the batteries entirely unnecessary. The life expectancy of these batteries is up to ten times higher than that of conventional led-gel batteries traditionally deployed in the tunneling industry.

This advanced battery technology makes the MSVe highly valuable for tunneling operations as their comparatively low weight improves the Dynamic of the drive technology while electric drives generally provide significantly higher efficiency compared to diesel-hydraulic drives.

The MSVe is especially popular on the tunneling job-site workshops as it is rarely seen there. Drive and brake technology neither require maintenance nor do any wear and tear parts need changing.
