The north-west rail link project is an extension of the Sydney suburban rail network, designed to relieve pressure on the road networks and stimulate both residential and commercial development throughout the region. This extension involves 23 km of line, connecting Epping and Rouse Hill, with 8 new stations. The plan is for the line to enter service in 2020.

Structure of the Project

The project involves the construction of a twin-tube tunnel, with different tunnelling methods being applied. The majority of the tunnel, some 15 km in total, will be dug using four MÜHLHÄUSER (former NFM) double Shield TBM’s, telescopic, hard rock boring machines. The 9 km section between the Bella Vista and Cherrybrook stations was excavated by TBMs 1 & 2, while the remaining 6 km, as far as Epping, was dug by machines 3 & 4.
